Surgical Hospitalist
Position Overview
The Department of Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is seeking qualified and motivated Surgical Hospitalists to join its multidisciplinary inpatient care teams. This role is integral to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered surgical care across TOH’s campuses and supports both elective and acute surgical services.
The precedent for this model has been utilized by the Division of Orthopedics at The Ottawa General Hospital and has been in place since 2016.
The successful candidates will work collaboratively with surgical subspecialties, trainees, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to manage perioperative surgical inpatients, support operating room activities, optimize patient flow, and enhance continuity of care.
The Divisions currently looking to appoint include:
· Thoracic Surgery
· Vascular surgery
· General Surgery (more than one service line including acute care surgery and Trauma)
· Gyne-Oncology

Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive inpatient care to surgical patients, including perioperative assessment and management.
- Perform daily inpatient rounds; coordinate investigations, consultations, and discharge planning.
- Opportunity to provide surgical assist services in the operating room, as required by the Division, including elective and urgent cases.
- Collaborate closely with attending surgeons, residents, fellows, consulting services, and allied health teams.
- Support quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and development of clinical pathways.
- Contribute to the academic mission of the department through teaching and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows, as applicable.
- On call responsibilities may be requested by some specialties.
Qualifications and Professional Requirements
- Independent licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
- Medical Liability Coverage (CMPA)
- CFPC or RCPSC designation
- Interest in inpatient surgical care and perioperative management; previous experience in that specialty is not required and pathology specific training and resources will be part of onboarding process
- Ability to function effectively in a collaborative, high-acuity academic environment
- Strong communication, organizational, and clinical decision-making skills

Remuneration, Schedule & Opportunities
- OHIP billing for inpatient services and surgical assist services
- Co-management model (not MRP)
- Patient roster approx. 15-25 (varies across sub-specialty)
- Work benefits are currently being explored
- Target income from OHIP billing: Approximately $300,000 per year
- Schedule: Weekdays, daytime hours – Full time equivalent
- HR and administrative cost recovery of 6% (including billing agent costs)
