Reporting to the Board of Directors and working in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Vice President, Medical, the Chief of Staff (COS) is the senior physician practice leader of SHN, and a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The COS is principally responsible for all aspects of quality for medical, dental, and midwifery care at SHN. The COS is responsible for participating in the development of the Hospital’s mission, objectives, and strategic plan and for the creation and effective implementation of plans, policies and procedures pertaining to medical staff consistent with SHN’s strategic plan and, in accordance with policies established by the Board, to ensure the smooth delivery of professional staff care (includes physicians, dentists and midwives) within SHN. The COS is the senior physician leader at SHN and plays a pivotal role in shaping the quality of care, professional practice, and medical governance across the organization.
The COS is an integral member of SHN’s Senior Leadership Team and a key advisor to the Board. This role provides strategic leadership to the professional staff community, chairs the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), and ensures that medical governance systems, quality frameworks, and clinical standards align with SHN’s strategic plan and legislative requirements.
The ideal candidate is a respected physician leader with deep experience in clinical governance, quality of care, and medical human resources planning while also being an exceptional communicator and relationship builder with demonstrated ability to navigate complexity, resolve conflict, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership of Medical/Professional Staff
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for all professional staff matters, ensuring the highest standards of clinical quality, safety, and professional practice.
- Chair the MAC and serve as an ex‑Officio member on key Board committees.
- Ensure effective performance management processes for Department Chiefs, Divisional Heads, and professional staff.
- Support conflict resolution, uphold SHN’s values and codes of conduct, and foster a respectful, high‑performance medical culture.
- Participate as an active clinical member within their specialty and model clinical excellence.
Medical Governance & Quality of Care
- Advise the MAC, Board Quality & Risk Committee, and Board of Directors on matters related to medical diagnosis, care, and treatment.
- Ensure professional staff compliance with legislation, corporate policies, ethical standards, and the Patient Declaration of Values.
- Oversee critical incident reporting and ensure appropriate follow‑up actions.
Medical Human Resources Planning
- Lead recruitment and retention strategies for physicians and key clinical leaders.
- Chair physician leader search committees and prioritize key clinical hires aligned with SHN’s strategic plan.
- Support succession planning for Department Chiefs, Divisional Heads, and other medical leaders.
- Ensure effective onboarding, orientation, education, and mentoring for professional staff.
Governance & Strategic Leadership
- Provide timely, accurate, and relevant professional staff information to the Board.
- Support strong Board–management relationships and shared accountability frameworks.
- Collaborate with the President & CEO on strategy development, business goals, and resource planning.
Research Ethics Board (REB) Oversight
- Support the coordination, review, and monitoring of research ethics processes.
- Ensure adherence to Tri‑Council Policy standards and promote ongoing education for REB members.
Qualifications and Experience
- Medical degree and certification in good standing with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
- Eligible for an active appointment at SHN.
- Eligible for, or in possession of, an independent practice license in Ontario.
- Demonstrated leadership experience within a complex hospital or health‑care environment.
- Experience chairing committees, leading medical governance processes, and working collaboratively with Boards.
- Exceptional communication, relationship‑building, and conflict‑resolution skills.
- A track record of fostering an engaged, accountable, and high‑performing medical culture.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in clinical, operational, or medical governance roles, with deep knowledge of system-wide care delivery and quality methodologies.
